J.T., a client at the University of Arkansas Speech and Hearing Clinic, undergoes therapy in the photographs above. J.T. wrote the poem below about a traffic accident that left him unable to speak. He is regaining control of articulators for normal speech production.
"99 was a year"
99 was a year
I would never forget,
Pure stupidity,
That's what I'd call it,
My best friend, his brother,
And myself,
Were cruising down a small road,
We came to an intersection,
But instead of stopping,
We went full force,
Plowing through it,
My side it was hit,
A truck going 55,
My home boy,
Walked out of it,
His 13 year old brother was killed,
Rest in peace,
I was flown by helicopter,
With a slight chance of survival,
Ruptured spleen,
It was a ride I wish I had never taken,
Sent to Children's,
Comatose for three months,
With one doctor,
Telling my mom,
I was still alive,
Health South in Fayetteville,
To undergo more therapy,
Finally waking up,
Timber Ridge next,
Again,
This was not a ride to remember,
Went home,
After that,
Easter Seals next,
Where I took giant leaps,
To get where I am today,
Never on this great place we call Earth,
Did I ever think of walking,
At one point,
I asked myself,
Why me,
Everybody has a purpose,
Those therapy sessions,
Teaching me how to walk again,
Were hell,
Who am I?
J.T.
A soldier,
I told myself,
As I endured the pain,
And that's my past,
I know,
God has a wonderful plan for me,
Just wait and see.
